Mamminasata Metropolitan

Makassar is a metropolis of Mamminasata Metropolitan. The metropolitan area includes Makassar city, Maros, Gowa and Takalar. Mamminasata Metropolitan defined by Decree of the Governor of South Sulawesi in 2003.

Mamminasata region covers the whole area of Makassar City, whole area of Takalar Regency, except two districts of Maros Regency, and except six districts of Gowa Regency. The exception caused the location of the districts are too far from the metropolis.

Mamminasata Metropolitan extends 2,462.3 square kilometers or 246,230 hectares (Final Report: Integrated Spatial Plan for the Metropolitan Area of Mamminasata; Mamminasata Metropolitan Cooperation Development Board; 2006)

Concept of Mamminasata Metropolitan
Metropolitan has clear definition. It’s different from the definition of city. Metropolitan is more complex and hierarchical concept. Makassar is not a metropolitan by itself. But if the existence contextualized to the surrounding areas, then it became metropolitan.

Usually, the name of mteropolitan is taken from the name of its metropolis. However, the trend in Indonesia is not the case. Name of metropolitan is generally taken by combining the names of all area. Such as Jabodetabek, as well Mamminasata.

Mamminasata Metropolitan areas classified into three zones:

  • Urban zones (red). This zone is concentration of settlement and economic activity, which is the whole area of Makassar, Maros town, Sungguminasa town, and Takalar town.
  • Semi-urban zones (yellow), this is periphery or outside the urban zone.
  • Conservation zones (green). This zone is a region in eastern part of Mamminasata which covers most of the Bawakaraeng plateau containing water sources and protected areas.

Urban dan Semi-urban urban zones are where people doing the activity. While the conservation zone cannot be used for activities because it serves a support environment for life in the two zones still comfortable.
