Phinisi Shipbuilding

PHINISI is a traditional type of Bugis-Makassar wooden ship. The making of this ship is very unique. Work of expert hands and has perfect balance. It is created in spite of relying on instinct and without modern tools. Come and watch how the making of this world traveler ship.

The shipbuilding place located in Tana Beru, Bontobahari District, Bulukumba Regency, Province of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The distance is about 150 kilometers southeast of Makassar City.

Bulukumba Regency was nicknamed Butta Panrita Lopi which means the region of ship maker. Therefore making of Phinisi is almost always found along the coastal of Bulukumba. Phinisis shipbuilding, especially in Bontobahari District, has been done for hundreds years.

There for the first time, The Phinisi Nusantara ship was launched to sail through Pacific Ocean to Vancouver, Canada, with captain Ammanagappa. Phinisi also sailed to Madagascar. There is also two skilful seamen Hati Marege and Damar Sagara sailed to Australia and Japan.

You will feel amaze to see people of Bontobahari expertise to make the traditional boats. If lucky enough, you can see the traditional ritual of local resident when they initiate the shipbuilding. Phinisi is loaded by Bugis-Makassar traditional philosophy.

Technique of phinisi traditional shipbuilding made by Bontobahari resident is unique in the common shipping techniques. In modern way, the ship's hull is made first. But in the making of phinisi wall is made first.

Boat experts also does not based on design and engineering complex calculations. They work simply rely on instinct or expertise obtained from nature. When the flotation process, it will soon be seen their works have perfect balance.

Phinisi has an important role in the history of archipelago (Nusantara). These ships are used by the first sailors to explore the world. Now, one of the Bontobahari' works is stored in Museum of Paris.

Bontobahari can be reached from Makassar City with public transportation (buses and minibuses). The trip is started from Mallengkeri Bus Station at the southern side of Makassar. Than from the Bulukumba Bus Station continue with transportation to Bontobahari. Rates ranged between IDR 40,000 up to IDR 50,000.

After witnessing the grandeur of boat experts, you can continue the journey to Tanjung Bira Beach, located on southern tip of Sulawesi Island. That is a very beautiful beach and also located in Bontobahari District.
